Artist Statement

Ocean Views of Oʻahu

For me, everything begins with color. And after living in Hawaiʻi for three years, the ocean has become one of my richest sources of inspiration. Its shifting blues and greens, the play of light and horizon, and the subtle textures of the shorelines often find their way into my work. The act of both spinning and crocheting becomes a way of not only holding onto and better remembering my own fleeting encounters with water, sky, and earth, but also offers a way to transform them into something tangible that can be shared with others.

This series offers four abstract “windows” onto Oʻahu’s shores. Each piece interprets a view from a different direction of the island, capturing the distinct palettes and moods of northern, leeward, windward, and southern coastlines. These works are not literal landscapes, but distilled atmospheres—expressions of color, movement, and memory. They are invitations to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the ocean as a shared presence in all of our lives.

Through this series, I hope to offer beauty as well as care. These works are reminders of the magic and wonder the ocean offers, but also of what we stand to lose if we don’t care for it, and why these waters and coastlines matter for generations to come.
