Debris Tapestry
Usually, finding pieces of plastic washed ashore is nearly as elusive as finding sea glass. But what arrived in the aftermath of the Kona Low storms in March of 2026 was unlike anything I had seen before.
The beauty of a familiar shoreline was obscured by a heavy reminder of our impact on the places we love.
The Kona Low Debris Tapestry is the artwork that emerged from that experience.

Artist Statement
Kona Low Debris Tapestry
In March of 2026, I collected a double handful of macroplastics from one of our favorite beaches on Oʻahu.
​
What began as an effort to gather materials for a small work of art quickly became a much heavier experience as I witnessed the sheer volume of debris carried in by the storm. The familiar beauty of a beloved coastline was suddenly overwhelmed by a reminder of the lasting impact of what we leave behind.
​
The fabric of handspun yarn creates an abstract landscape that transitions from sandy neutrals into seafoam greens and ocean blues, inspired by the beauty of HawaiÊ»i’s shores.
​
Embedded throughout the piece are 58 individual pieces of macroplastics collected from that shoreline. Each fragment was transformed into a bead by carefully melting holes through the plastic, allowing these remnants of our presence to become part of the landscape itself.
​
At first glance, the scattered pieces may resemble sea glass or small treasures found in the sand. Looking closer, they reveal another story. This work holds both the beauty of the ocean and the responsibility we share in caring for the places we love.
The Ocean Within
Mini Exhibition
Created especially for The Ocean Within at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California, this piece is part of a mini exhibition exploring the intersection of art and ocean science. The exhibition invites artists and visitors alike to look more closely at the ocean, not only as a place of beauty and wonder, but as a living system we are all connected to.
